Our History
“Ecoagriculture” describes landscapes that support both agricultural production and biodiversity conservation, working in harmony to improve the livelihoods of rural communities. While many rural communities have independently practiced ecoagriculture for thousands of years, over the past century many of these landscapes have given way to segregated land use patterns, with some areas employing intensive farming practices without regard to biodiversity impacts, and other areas fenced off completely for habitat or watershed protection.
A new ecoagriculture movement is now gaining momentum to unite land managers and other stakeholders from diverse environments to find compatible ways to conserve biodiversity while also enhancing agricultural production

| 2001 |
Movement recognized by IUCN and Future Harvest in “Common Ground, Common Future” Report – 2001
The ecoagriculture movement was recognized internationally in a joint study of the World Conservation Union and the Future Harvest Foundation published in 2001. First published as a report titled “Common Ground, Common Future,” it was later expanded to become a book with the title “Ecoagriculture” (McNeely and Scherr 2001; 2003). The study confirmed the dominant influence of agriculture on wild species and habitats around the world, and also identified promising examples of land use strategies and practices that benefited both (“ecoagriculture”). |
| 2002 |
Ecoagriculture Partners formed as an incubator organization - 2002
Building on discussions from earlier meetings, participants in the Implementation Conference held prior to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa, decided to form Ecoagriculture Partners, with members to include farmers and farmer organizations, non-governmental organizations, public agencies, scientific organizations, agribusinesses, and conservation organizations. From late 2002 through 2004, Ecoagriculture Partners was “incubated” as a special project by its initial co-sponsors: the Future Harvest Foundation, Forest Trends, the World Conservation Union (IUCN), and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). |
| 2003 |
First EP strategic planning meeting - 2003
Ecoagriculture Partners held its first Strategic Planning Workshop at IUCN headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, in February 2003, with nearly 60 representatives from partner organizations. The goal of the initial 2-year Work Plan developed in Gland was to assess the global state of ecoagriculture through the commissioning of several synthesis papers on key tops of ecoagriculture. |
| 2003 |
"Ecoagriculture" book published, outlining strategies of successful ecoagriculture landscapes - 2003
Building on the 2001 report "Common Ground, Common Future", Ecoagriculture Partners published a book titled "Ecoagriculture," a comprehensive overview of case studies that highlighted six strategies through which ecoagriculture outcomes might be achieved. |
| 2003 |
First International Ecoagriculture Conference and Practitioners' Fair held - 2003
Case studies and ecoagriculture experiences were presented at the first International Ecoagriculture Conference and Practitioners' Fair in Nairobi, Kenya, where 210 ecoagriculture innovators from 46 countries gathered from September 26 to October 1, 2005. Conference participants produced a joint statement—the “Nairobi Declaration on Ecoagriculture”—and developed recommendations for priority collaborative activities to scale up ecoagriculture. |
| 2005 |
Ecoagriculture Partners legally incorporated as 501c3 non-governmental organization - 2005
Ecoagriculture Partners was legally incorporated in January 2005 as a 501c3 non-governmental organization under U.S. law to catalyze collaborative implementation of its program of work. A detailed Strategic Plan 2005-2008 was developed and project activities are now underway. |
